I love “different”, so when Amali and Gautham emailed me about wanting to do an engagement shoot up at Whipple Observatory where they met, of course I was crazy down for it.
Although I have to say, walking around with them, it was humbling learning how very little I know about astronomy. Gautham is attending Harvard, Amali is working there and she also went to MIT. And they both work occasionally at Whipple itself. When they started talking about gamma rays, super novas, spectras, etc…I tried my best to understand but it was tough. I realized it truthfully at the end when I asked “Well, can I see some images from this telescope?” and Amali showed me a line graph and said here you go. And I was like…”Ahhh, a spectra…I think I get it now.”
I barely got it.
But needless to say, it was unbelievably rad hanging out with these two and hearing them talk about how much they love astronomy. Her engagement ring is even made out of meteor rock! Really!
It was also super cold at the top. The first pictures are at the Ridge area of Hopkins Peak, and then further down you’ll see the rotating building at that’s at the very tippy top, 7800 feet. Snow, chill, wind…it got a bit too cold and we got some pictures before running back into the heated truck.
The light up there was amazing…the views, the heights we were at…unlike any kind of photoshoot I’ve done before. So much fun.
Thank you guys for inviting me to hang with you…hope you enjoy the photos!
