Storms rolling across the Arizona desert

This morning I woke up, looked outside and saw fluffy clouds. The photographer switch inside of me was instantly ignited and I left the house after a few minutes. We just haven’t seen any weather in weeks and weeks…for a guy like me, that’s an eternity! It didn’t even look that spectacular out there, and in fact, the clouds you see above were the stormiest of anything and they didn’t even drop any rain. This picture almost didn’t happen. In fact, most of my best shots end up being unplanned.  I had been shooting the clouds, the sky and some [...]

Foggy day in Corvallis, Oregon

Yesterday I picked up a roll of film I had lying around from a long time ago. Now it wasn’t a “photography” roll of film, I really have only been doing this hobby seriously for less than a year now, it was just some pictures my wife and I must have taken over 5 years ago. But I had no idea how long. Well, when I got them back, I found out it was almost 10 years old. A very long time ago, we looked like kids, lived in our apartment and most of them were just silly photos. But [...]

Clouds and Light

Clouds always fascinate me and I love catching them in cool displays of light, darkness and nature. The other morning we had a little storm system move through, so I ran out south of my house to see if there was anything awesome to shoot. The sun was still rising and it cast some great rays behind these clouds. I enjoy capturing clouds like this and enhancing their beauty through HDR and processing, or even just through simple black and white.  These above are HDR with some color adjustments added to give it a fun look and really bring out [...]

Weekend storms in Arizona

We had some nice storms roll through town this past weekend and I was lucky enough to get out and shoot a bit on Sunday. Here’s a couple of my favorites from that day. This one above is a two-shot panoramic stitched together. I enhanced the contrast and colors a bit to make it more vivid and exciting. Shots of the falling rain. Murky and ominous clouds approach. A black and white…rain falling on one end, low hanging clouds on the other… Just a creepy shot at the airport. A monstrous, low hanging storm. Love this shot…it’s gotten me an [...]

Storms and Clouds over the Arizona Skies

Monday was eventful in terms of capturing some cool shots of storms, clouds and falling rain around the Phoenix area. I drove out to Apache Junction and snapped some shots of the incoming storm, plus a few other cloud pictures. Mmmm, I love clouds. After the rain…the sunlight streams through a hole in the clouds. Impending storm heads to the east Valley. Shot from Idaho Road and Lost Dutchman looking West.

Storms over the Superstition Mountains

I think I talked about this road I discovered solely by accident about a month ago. Brown Road going east from the 202 turns into Lost Dutchman. At Idaho Road it’s at the peak of a low hill and suddenly you get this amazing view of the Superstition Mountains. The first time I saw it was when I was shooting around those mountains and just headed west on that road. When it reached the hill, I stopped because there were storms to the west and I could see them clearly there. However, as I got out of the car…I turned [...]

Winter Storm Photos: Part 2

On Sunday the wife was sick so I gathered up Lyla and we went storm chasing on several occasions.  Here are a few shots from our fun filled day! Great big downpour over the San Tans. Look at the green desert! All that rain is making our desert floors bloom! You’ll be seeing more clouds like this in the coming days, I’m liking the look and feel of this kind of processing. Another shot of the rain over the San Tan Mountains. Dark clouds. A low hanging, spooky cloud. Sunset, without the colors! Why? Because the colors didn’t turn out [...]

Stormy skies

On my way home from work Wednesday, I snapped some photos of the cool cloudy, stormy skies. The first one was actually BEFORE leaving wok from a nearby parking garage, the rest were shot southwest of Ahwatukee, along Riggs Road west of I-10.

Funny story…

…so this car is stuck in mud in a wash/river bed where I take photos now and then. Awhile ago I was there, walked up the other side and when I looked back, a cop was by my car. He told me when I came back that it was a hot spot for stolen cars to be dumped. Crazy. So today I stop by here and I see this car. Stuck in the mud. Window open. Who would drive a Saturn down into a wash? I figured it was stolen of course, so I snapped this photo of it, looked [...]

Parting shots

I took a few more pictures on my last two days in Corvallis, Oregon. The first one below was of a very foggy morning and I just had to stop on my way into the office. I kind of like the lights in the background of this neighborhood park. The ones below were shot up top this hill and a road that I just happened to drive up. The sight was breathtaking. Particularly love the above shot…the tree at the end of the path completes it I think. I’m fascinated with road shots of late.
